On August 1, 2008, we will be opening a petition for all citizens to show their support for the world to acknowledge the true, historically accurate name of Mt. Qomolangma as the name for the tallest mountain in the world. This petition will allow people to register their name, geographical information, and any other information that will allow a democratic concensus to effect actual change.
The honor of the top signatory will be given, in memoriam, to Sir George Everest himself. His actions as Suveyor General of India, in which he insisted that all locations should be assigned their local, preferential names, along with the fact that when the mountain was first proposed to be named after him, his own objections were overruled. While arguments can be made one way or the other regarding Western colonialization and intrusion, it should be noted that Everest himself was gracious and deferential to virtually every person he met during the course of his tenure as Surveyor General. To that end, and to correct a decision that should have been made once the proper name were known to the Western world, Everest's name will be placed on the top of the list.
We will also approach individuals who have openly advocated such change, including Professor Gekel of the Tibet Information Center in Beijing, Professor Xu Tiebing of the Beijing Broadcasting Institute, and the estate of author Lin Chao, in memoriam. These individuals have shown a considerable amount of advocacy for the restoration of the name, and we hope to associate with their commitment to such a cause.
If anyone would like to recommend any individual whose actions would show worthiness at being incuded in the premier top tier listings of the petition, forward such requests to Mike@MountQ.Org.
